COVID 19 Return to Play Information for October 5: Weekly Updates(10-12-20)

Student Athletes and Families:

Fall Awards nights:  The fall sports award night is scheduled for Thursday, 11/12.  I will be working with head coaches this week to determine if all teams will meet on this night to celebrate or if we will have individual nights.  The cafeteria and the main gym are the only two facilities where we can have a large group socially distanced, so please look for contact from your head coach on this topic.

Winter Sports Begin:  Girls basketball begins on 10/19, G Swim and Dive begins on 10/26, Wrestling begins on 11/2, and Boys Swim and Dive and Boys basketball begin on 11/9.  Make sure you check with your coach to make sure you have all your paperwork submitted so you can start on time.  All forms are available online and in the athletic office.

Close Contact Beast:   Well, the Covid "close contacts" are catching up with us.  It is nearly impossible to social distance as required by "close contact" rules at school with us having so may kids here.  Your child can ask their teacher to move every 10 minutes or sit in a corner.  I can't guarantee teachers can accommodate all of this, but it's worth asking.   I see kids at ballgames watching their friends play, but sitting right next to a large group.  If one person in that group were to test positive, all in that group would be out for 14 days from that "close contact".  It is so difficult to stay away from each other, but please try.  We are in state tournaments and have lost kids from at least half of our teams competing during the tournament due to "close contacts".   Thanks for your diligence on this.

Competitive Accomplishments:
On Saturday, the boys and girls  CC teams placed 2nd and 4th, respectively, which qualifies them both for regionals next Saturday at Ox Bow.  The volleyball team finished with 22 wins and plays Elkhart at Warsaw at 6 PM this Thursday in sectional play.

The football draw has us hosting Mishawaka on Friday, 10/30 at 7 PM.  We are no longer exploring using the bye week to make up our regular season game with Mishawaka.  There was some talk of this, but both schools have decided not to pursue it.  The sectional game will count towards our NLC season.

Athletic Eligibility:  Winter academic eligibility is a big concern of mine with our hybrid schooling this year.  Please be checking grades as a family.  The official certification date for grades for athletic eligibility is Friday, 10/30.  Student-athletes should confirm with their teachers this week if they are passing or not so that you can use fall break to make things up.  This will mainly affect our upcoming winter sport student-athletes, but some fall sports will hopefully still be competing.  Check your grades please!

Return to Play:  Health professionals have added to the  “return to play” protocol for a student who tests positive for Covid.  A student must have an exam from a doctor and the doctor will determine if the student is ready for return, or may require cardio exam prior to that determination.  Lung and cardiac concerns are high with Covid.

Tickets:  Please visit goshenredhawks.org for updated schedules.  There is an announcement called “Ticket Plan” that should have the latest options for each contest for this coming week.  Under the Tickets info/Booster button, you can find Pay/View options and Digital Ticket(Ticket Spicket) purchasing options for home games.   Winter sports will still be on restrictions, so we will sell single event tickets only.

Off Season Opportunities:  The weight room is open after school several days a week, but students need to sign up with Coach Miller. (tgmiller@goshenschools.org) Baseball , Softball, and B and G Basketball have been working out this fall in preparation for next year.  if you are not in a fall sport and are interested in those sports, have you been working with your team to get better?

As always, Peace be with you, GHS!
